Your Assignment

We will tell you as much as possible about your booking. When we offer the assignment to you please check that we have given you the following details:

  • Full name and address of Company
  • Your hours of work
  • The type of business/service
  • Details of the location, directions, bus routes, landmarks, etc
  • The name of the person you will report to
  • The skills required and systems you will use
  • The hourly pay rate
  • Expected length of booking

PLEASE always let Caroline know if something isn't working within the assignment. Many of the problems that can arise when temping can be solved by a phone call from us to the company.

You can make life easier for yourself by asking questions, for example ask to see a sample layout of letters, invoices and reports, ask if you are not sure who has priority in terms of work, ask someone to repeat their name if you are unsure.

These pointers may help you to become more than 'just a temp' and will increase your status and so your enjoyment of the job.

  • Introduce yourself by name and not just 'the temp'.
  • Ask where the kitchen and bathroom/toilet are if you are not shown.

Working with PCs

A workstation must meet minimum requirements:

  • Your chair must have adjustable height and back support.
  • Keyboards and screens should be adjusted for your comfort.
  • Bright lights should not be reflected on the screen.
  • You should not be looking directly at bright lights.
  • You should have enough workspace to take whatever documents you need.

Posture at Work

Assess your posture at work.

Q: Is your back supported properly?
A: Sit with your lower back against the back in the chair. This will help to support your lower back in its natural curve, which reduces the strain on your lower back discs.

Q: Do you hunch forward?
A: This increases the stress in your upper back and neck causing back pain and headaches. Lift your chest up.

Q: Do your hips and shoulders face the same direction?
A: Many peoples' computer screens are offset - this will cause problems. You should sit square to your screen.

Q: Are your eyes level with the top of the screen?
A: Too high and it will strain your neck, too low and you will slump.

Q: Is your keyboard easy to use without reaching forwards?
A: Your arms should be relaxed with your elbows by your waist and your forearms horizontal. This position keeps your shoulders and arms relaxed while your work.

Q: Is your chair underneath your table?
A: When you can't bring your chair underneath, you will slump forward. Taking the armrests off your chair may help position it to give you much needed back support.

Exercise for prevention guide
Micro Breaks: get up and move around every 20-30 minutes
Mini Breaks: every 2-3 hours moving away from the computer itself for 10-15 minutes
Walking: 10-15 minutes everyday. Walking encourages blood flow and movement to all joints and muscles.
Tip: Program your computer with an alarm to remind you to carry out these breaks.

Rates of Pay

We hope that rates of pay will continue to be competitive; it is after all why we all work. The rate, however, may vary dependant on the company with which the assignment is undertaken and often we are guided by the client on what we can pay.

Timesheets

Several timesheets will be forwarded to you at the beginning of each assignment and on a regular basis thereafter if appropriate. If for some reason they do not arrive, call our administrator at Time Recruitment, telephone 0131 623 9299. Alternatively you can download a timesheet from website. Enter your details, fax a signed copy, and keep the original for your own records

Please ensure your timesheet is checked and signed by the client at the end of each week and that a copy is with us by Friday evening by 5.00 pm, either via email or fax. Your salary will be paid into your bank account by the following Friday (i.e. the week after you have worked).

Payroll

Our Administrators are responsible for the first stages of the temporary payroll and we utilise the services of a third party professional payroll firm to complete the full payroll cycle. The payroll and invoicing process is completed every Monday, and Caroline will of course be happy to deal with any assignment enquiries during this time.

  • Please remember to bring your timesheet to work every week.
  • Please ensure that you fill in the correct week commencing date on the timesheet
  • Please do not photocopy a timesheet which was signed on a previous occasion by the client.
  • Take time to total your working hours correctly and always remember to deduct breaks taken.

Statutory Entitlement to Paid Leave

Under the Working Time Regulations 1998 (as amended), the Temporary Worker is entitled to annual leave as follows:

  • For work carried out from 1 April 2009 onwards: 5.6 weeks.

If the statutory minimum leave is subsequently decreased or increased then entitlement to leave under this clause will be decreased or increased so as to be set at the statutory minimum as it applies to any period in which work is carried out.

All entitlement to leave must be taken during the course of the leave year in which it accrues and none may be carried forward to the next year.
For the purposes of calculating entitlement to leave under this clause, the leave year commences on the date you start your assignment.

If you are ready to take leave please check what your accrued entitlement is with an Administrator by email or by telephone at 0131 623 9299 and write "paid holiday" on your timesheet when appropriate. We update the holiday spreadsheet on Tuesdays, so this is probably the best day to contact us regarding this subject.

Before arranging any leave please remember to check with the client first that this is convenient for them and then advise Caroline that you are taking leave and of the exact dates (email preferred).

Full information is provided in the Terms of Engagement, which you will receive when accepting your first booking.
