When is the best time to look for a new position?

This is a decision which may be taken out of our hands, particularly in times of uncertainty, however there are occasions when we decide to change for reasons which will not always enhance our prospects of finding the "right" job. For example, if we stick with a position in which we are not entirely satisfied in the hope that something might change, there is a risk that we may seek a new position purely to get away from our current situation but not necessarily progressing to a role that will enhance our career prospects.

The most favourable time for change is when we are most satisfied in our current role and would therefore only move to a new position if it could substantially improve on our current prospects. The difficulty is in recognising when we are at a peak in our current role, often not recognised until we have pressed that peak, or that a degree of complacency sets in, after all, why we change if we have everything we need, for now.

The question we should be asking is not purely whether "the grass is greener" but more pertinently,

"Am I likely to be in the same position in two years time?"

If the answer is most likely to be yes and you are happy with this, then there would be very little inclination to change. If an affirmative answer could cause you some concern then it may be time to consider your career options.

Time Recruitment's consultants are positioned to advise you on current market trends and to assist you with your search.

Take a look at some of our current vacancies or contact one of our consultants for an informal and confidential discussion.
